Naval Proceedings Spotlights Our Shipboard Training

In the February 2026 issue of U.S. Naval Institute Proceedings, we argue that the Navy’s next leap in readiness comes from shrinking the distance between learning and doing, bringing immersive training directly to sailors ashore, afloat, and submerged.

The article describes how we converted a classroom trainer into a self-paced program that runs on untethered virtual reality (VR) headsets and handheld gaming PCs. In user testing with 48 sailors across two studies, both approaches earned perfect scores. VR builds muscle memory through embodied practice, while handheld devices make it easy to get reps and sets underway. Compact enough to fit in a drawer and familiar to a generation raised on gaming, these portable sims fight skill decay through spaced repetition right where sailors work.

Reinventing readiness takes visionary government and military leaders willing to partner with a small, agile team outside the legacy DoD vendor pool. Learn how the Naval Air Warfare Center Training Systems Division and the Gronstedt Group are driving this shift.
