Navy SBIR Contract for Air & Missile Defense Trainer

The Gronstedt Group, in partnership with OptTek Systems, is proud to announce it has been awarded a U.S. Navy Small Business Innovation Research (SBIR) Phase I contract for Topic N251-035, titled "Integrated Air & Missile Defense (IAMD) Adaptive Trainer."


The objective of this topic is to develop a concept for an immersive adaptive training system. The Navy is seeking an approach to continuously improve operator performance in response to evolving threat landscapes. Traditional training methods often use predefined scenarios, which can hinder the development of skills needed for the ever-changing tactics of adversaries. The goal of the project is to leverage Artificial Intelligence (AI) and Machine Learning (ML) to create a next-generation training system that can:


  • Adapt to the strengths and weaknesses of individual trainees.

  • Utilize immersive technologies to create realistic and engaging training environments.

  • Incorporate performance metrics to track progress and identify areas for improvement.


This Phase I effort will focus on developing the initial concept and design for such a system. The Gronstedt Group is honored to support the U.S. Navy on this project to enhance the effectiveness of training for its personnel.



This is our second Navy SBIR, following our wargame SBIR earlier this year. It also builds on our latest work with the Naval Air Warfare Center Training Systems Division (NAWCTSD) under an Other Transaction Agreement (OTA) to develop portable shipboard maintenance trainers through Mobile-Navy Enhanced Simulation for Training (Mobile-NEST). That work earned a Best Paper Award at ITEK 2025 and will be featured in the Naval Institute’s Proceedings February 2026 issue. In addition, we are one of five named vendors on Dignitas Technologies’ $99 million ACTS II IDIQ contract.
